Your First Tutoring Session: What to Expect & How to Prepare

A helpful guide for new tutors on preparing, setting goals, and building rapport for a smooth first session.
Tutor

Starting as a tutor can be both exciting and a bit nerve-wracking. Whether you’re looking to earn extra income, gain teaching experience, or share your knowledge, that first session is key to setting the right tone. Here’s a laid-back guide to help you ace it with confidence.

Prepare Ahead
Get familiar with the subject and any topics your student wants to cover. Plan a loose structure to keep the session flowing smoothly.

Set Clear Goals
Talk with your student about what they want to achieve. Setting clear goals makes sure you’re both on the same page and focused.

Create a Comfortable Space
Make sure the environment, whether online or in-person, is free from distractions. Have everything you need on hand to keep things organized.

Icebreaker and Assessment
Start with a quick intro to get to know each other. Then, figure out what the student already knows to know where to start and what to focus on.

Be Patient and Positive
Everyone learns at their own pace. Stay patient and encourage your student with positive feedback—it’s great for their confidence.

Be Flexible
Not everyone learns the same way. Some students prefer visuals, others hands-on practice—be ready to switch things up to keep it engaging.

Give Constructive Feedback
Let them know what they did well and where they can improve. Keep the feedback clear and positive, and encourage questions.

Plan for the Next Session
Talk about future sessions and how to keep the momentum going. Scheduling regular sessions helps both of you stay on track.

Reflect and Improve
After the session, think about what went well and what could be better next time. It’ll help you get better and make the tutoring experience even better for your student.

Stay Professional
Respect your student’s time and keep things clear regarding expectations, fees, and schedules.

With a little prep, some patience, and a focus on collaboration, you can set the stage for a great learning experience. Remember, tutoring isn’t just about teaching—it’s about helping students reach their goals and grow!
